Okay so I've been watching a lot of documentaries and docuseries about Fundamental Christian religion and the sects that are full on cults, and I noticed something…
Why do they ALL require women and girls to wear their hair so puffy? Like, piled on top of their head with extra volume type hair. Or even when it's down, they have very feathered bangs.
These are entirely disconnected cults, and the only thing they have in common is that it's based on Fundamental Christian-ish stuff.
And puffy hair.

Grew up fundie. For us, there were limitations on everything. You had to have long hair, you couldn't use gel, a bunch of limits on hair bands and colors and stuff. Pretty much the only thing you could do is have curly bangs and curly tips. Then it became kind of a thing if you Didn't do them. Like "put effort into yourself" kind of thing. Something the moms and grandmas would get on you for. Whole perms would go in and out of being ok or not too.

A major figure in Christian fundamentalism, Bill Gothard, was widely known to be into the look and so it kind of became the standard for female beauty in certain fundie circles. (Jim and Michelle Duggar, of "19 Kids and Counting And At Least Two Are Known Sex Offenders" fame, are followers of his teachings if you want an easy visual aid.)
As someone who was in a Gothard cult wrote:
*An emphasis on controlling every aspect of a woman’s physical appearance was central to the ATI lifestyle, and conforming to Gothard’s personal tastes was an obsession shared by women and men.*[ *This meant wearing our hair (our Biblical "crowning glory") long and keeping our curls touchably soft and loose. Gothard even made it known he strongly disliked the “wet look” (women wearing too much gel in their hair), and I was even once pulled aside at an ATI training institute in Oklahoma and told to start wearing less product.*](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/01/childhood-in-cult-hard-imagine-survival-truly-unbelievable)

It is an act of conspicuous submission that affirms male aesthetics over female comfort.
The Gothard link has already been explained, but this is the psychology it is resting on.
Big puffy hair that is also touchably soft is incredibly hard to achieve. It requires a ton of time investment at hair salons and at home. Lots of expensive products, because old-fashioned cheap hairspray is sticky and makes the hair unpleasant to touch. The big sculpted hairstyles of the 50's and 60's were conspicuous wealth markers: that a woman had the time to go to the beauty parlor every week and have this hair bubble constructed on her head. But you couldn't touch those hairstyles much, because they are hard and sticky and very easy to mess up in such a way that they need another visit to the beauty parlor to fix. A good fundie wife doesn't have the time to take away from her kids, so she has to do her hair at home. And it has to be soft. And it has to be big. It has to obviously show a ton of labor went into it (because it can't look like hair that just grew like that), while also obviously showing that she is doing it at home, instead of gadding off to the beauty parlor every week.
The crimping is every 3-6 months, so that's okay. The bangs take 20-30 minutes to do, just like her "natural" make-up takes about 20-30 minutes to do once she has her routine down. Her hair has to be cultivated, which takes time away from other duties, but her primary duty is being sexually pleasing to her husband and making other men feel jealous of her husband.
By voluntarily taking on complex, expensive grooming that is not even remotely comparable to what any man in the congregation is ever called upon to do, especially with that specific erotic undercurrent, a woman with big puffy hair that is still touchably soft is performing for the entire congregation that she is "womanly. She is centering male desire. She has her husband's erotic comfort at the forefront of her mind. She is conspicuous to the other women as a woman who invests time and energy and investment into making men feel like their erotic tastes rule her life. These women are often rewarded in little ways, like being put in charge of Women's Bible Study or the nursery. She may get to organize snacks for Men's Bible Study.
I was raised with a foot in two different NAR cults: one, an elementary school that taught Christian dominionism using the Young Earth Biblical literalist Abeka curriculum, and the other, an evening church (Sunday and Wednesday nights) that had become infested with Institute of Basic Life Principles doctrine around the time that I started attending with my school best friend. Not every woman wore big puffy hair, but only women who wore big puffy hair were trusted with any power.
I went to an Anglican Church on Sunday mornings and it was conservative, but I saw a much wider variety of hairstyles among women, even women trusted with power. The priest was a woman who wore the semi-structured bob popular for middle-aged women in the mid-90's, but the worship leader wore her hair just like Lucy Lawless in *Xena*. The women in evening church and school never got higher than leader of under-12's or a woman's group. My elementary school did not allow women to teach boys older than 13, except for art/music, lest boys get the idea that women were allowed to lead. But no woman who got to do anything in either space had a simple, uncomplicated, low-maitenance hairstyle.

By any chance are all of these documentaries about FLDS cults, like the new one on Netflix? FLDS does have a specific hairstyle like you describe but I haven't seen another Christian cult that goes that far. The quiverfull get kinda close but the bangs and top of the head aren't quite as elaborate as FLDS.

The taller the hair, the closer to god.

It's because it was a popular hairstyle in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They haven't moved on from the styles.

If the Christians in question are Pentecostal, it might be related to their edict that women aren't allowed to cut their hair, so that's a style older women will adopt.

I wish I could remember which video/book I saw it in but I remember hearing one woman say that it was because everyone had to dress the same modest way, and that hair was the one thing they had a small amount of control over, so the big overwrought hair styles were a stand in for clothes as status symbols. Don't take my word for it though since I can't locate the source.
