イベリアアイベックス（山岳ヤギの一種）の亜種、ピレネーアイベックス（ブカルド）は2000年に最後の個体が死亡した。かつては数多く生息していたが、狩猟や他種との競合によって個体数が激減。その最後の一頭「セリア」は、ミレニアムの節目に倒木の下敷きになって息絶えているところを発見された。
彼女が死ぬ1年前、耳から組織サンプルが採取され、凍結保存されていた。その組織から体細胞を取り出し、別のヤギの卵母細胞と融合。285個の胚が作られ、54個が12頭のヤギに移植されたけど、妊娠2ヶ月を超えて生き残ったのはわずか2頭のみ。
2003年、ついに生きたクローンが誕生——しかし肺の奇形により、わずか数分で死亡した。一応「種の復活」には成功したけど、このプロセスは絶滅する前から始まっていた点が重要。マンモスのような遠い過去に絶滅した種の復活はまだまだ夢の話だ。

A subspecies of the Iberian ibex (mountain goat), the last living Pyrenean ibex died in 2000. Once abundant, their numbers dropped due to hunting and competition. Celia, the last of her type, was found dead at the turn of the millenium, having been killed by a falling tree
A year before she died, tissue was taken from her ear and cryogenically frozen.
Adult cells were taken from the tissue and fused with oocytes (immature egg cells) from another goat which had had their genetic material removed. The embryos were transferred to a domestic goat which acted as a surrogate mother.
285 embryos were made. 54 were transferred to 12 goats. Only 2 survived the first 2 months of gestation.
In 2003, a live clone was eventually born, however it only survived a few minutes due to lung defects.
Whilst they did manage to revive the species (albeit briefly), the process began before extinction (tissue/genetic material was taken whilst the final animal was still alive), and extant material of species like woolly mammoths has degraded significantly – so reviving long gone species is still a distant dream

絶滅した動物をクローンで蘇らせたのに数分で死亡って、科学のロマンと現実の残酷さが凝縮されすぎてる話だったね。285個の胚を作って、たった1頭が生まれて、それも肺の奇形で数分の命…。しかもこれができたのは「絶滅前に組織サンプルを保存してたから」で、マンモスみたいなとっくに絶滅した種はDNAが劣化しすぎてまだ無理らしい。ジュラシック・パークはまだまだ先の話ってことだね。それにしても「2回絶滅した唯一の動物」ってパワーワードすぎるわ。
