Last night my partner called me in the middle of the night saying she was having an emergency. I answered right away. She then told me about something that had already happened: a homeless person had approached her at the airport, said some off-putting/weird things that freaked her out. She may have been threatened (I’m not entirely sure), but there was no physical harm and it wasn’t an ongoing threat at the time she called. Airport police were called, they asked if she wanted to press charges, and she said no. I listened to the whole story. I told her “I’m sorry you had to go through that, that’s horrible.” I validated that it sounded scary. I also offered practical support: if she wanted to press charges or even change jobs because of the stress, I’d back her 100%. I tried to show I cared and was concerned about her safety and well-being. Instead of feeling supported, she got really upset and said calling me made her feel worse because I didn’t immediately say “Are you ok?” in the ex
私は「NAH(どっちも悪くない)」かな。

I’m gonna go NAH. You really tried to support her, but she’s right that you didn’t actually check in on how she is handling it and feeling now. I agree with her that that is an important part as well to supporting someone, but you’re absolutely not an AH for not realizing that in the moment.
I do want to clarify that this isn’t you “not using the exact script” that she wants. It’s you being focused on validation and practical support without checking on her *current* emotional state. That’s a valid missing piece to this conversation the two of you had.
AITA板(r/AmItheAsshole)はこの「NAH/NTA/YTA/ESH」って判定タグで議論する文化なんよ。

For what lots of others are saying, she’s not a drama queen and she’s not intentionally emotionally manipulating you or controlling. Those are dismissive and wild conclusions to jump to here, and a reminder more people could use some therapy.
She was clearly shaken up and in an emotional state when she called. Sure, the situation had already happened, and to you may have seemed like it had been handled by others, but it sounds like whatever happened felt traumatizing to her. It’s understandable that you think validating her experience with “I’m sorry, that’s horrible” and offering solutions was support. You’re coming from a logical state, not emotional. But in that moment, it doesn’t sound like she was looking for practical, solution-based support, but comforting and caring emotional support. To just hear her out and ask if she’s okay. To her, hearing “are you okay” before solutions might actually say to her, “I care about you.” ~~NAH~~ here, because it’s just a combo of misunderstanding of each other’s perception of “needs” and heightened emotions. Try asking her what works for her in emotional moments. “Are you wanting to be heard, hugged, or helped?” And she should know what works for you in return.
Edit: I still stand by the other things I said, but after reading your comments… my brother in christ it’s time to put any ego aside, kinda YTA. Also good time to recognize women have a very different experience moving through this world, especially when it comes to threats/danger, and being dismissed. There’s lots of learning (and unlearning) to do here

Yes, "I'm sorry that happened" and "I'll help you press charges" are valid support. None of those statements are the same thing as asking "Are you okay" though.
Ultimately, NAH. A long time ago, I had to be told by my partner that he wanted me to ask when something sounded bad, because I was just assuming he had it handled and wasn't _actually_ checking on him and his emotional (or physical!) state. I wasn't brought up by people to do that kind of check-in, so I did need to be told.

NAH, and to the comments saying she’s a drama queen, that’s a bit much yeah? That’s a scary situation to be in especially if airport police were involved.
I think the issue, as others have pointed out, is that you immediately went into problem solving mode which is helpful to some, but it seems like your partner needed you to be there for her emotionally by checking in. “Are you okay?” That was all you needed to ask. Now, I will say her response of ‘you make everything worse’ was a tad unkind, but this might be the perfect opportunity to ask what has been building to that statement, and how she needs you to support her better in the future. Something my friend will ask me often is- “would you like my advice or do you just need to talk it out’ and honestly, it’s been incredibly helpful.

In regards to the situation NAH, but reading some of your responses I wonder why you're even still with her?

YTA, simply because I read your replies, you sounded dismissive as fuck.
Your post, I would have thought it was a simple miscommunication, but in the replies, the mask slipped off.
If you love someone, the last thing I would do is badmouth them to strangers.

As another solutions-driven type of person, I urge you: **resist the urge to fix the problem**! She wanted to talk and be listened to:
* "Are you OK?"
* "What can I do to help?", etc.
You were sympathetic and then went into problem-solving mode:
* "That's terrible. Call the police!"
* "Quit your job!", etc.
Do you see how these responses differ? To you, emotional support might be the latter; to her, it isn't (at least, not in that situation). At a calmer time, you should let her know you want to be there for her, and discuss how you can do this. NAH.

This sounds like me and my bf except I’m the girlfriend. To me asking “are you ok?” is the most basic and obvious response that shows care. Like this is what I do, what all my female friends do without a second thought. I would ask a coworker this question. Hell I would ask someone that I just bumped into the street that question in this situation.
It’s just so baffling to me that this is not the first ingrained response in anyone. It really does make you think.
英語圏の「Are you ok?」

Tensions could just be running high, something scary happened to her and she’s probably feeling a lot of emotions. While I do think she may be overreacting to your response, I think it’s possible she just wanted to be comforted instead of “offered practical solutions”
I’m not a very emotional person, I’m actually quite bad at dealing with emotional people and tend to leave comforting to other people as it’s not my strong suit(I will if I have to, but I think it’s best for all involved that unless we have a similar coping style or you just want me to be there, probably best to let someone more emotionally adept to help), I fall much more into the distraction type of coping, so I relate to wanting to give practical solutions, but sometimes that’s not what’s needed.
Everyone copes differently, I prefer to be left alone, others prefer to be doted on, some like to act as if nothing happened, it’s all up to the individual, I think you guys just have different expectations of comfort, and you either need to acknowledge and learn each others or recognize that you guys have different emotional needs/responses and move on.
I would have a serious talk about what you guys expect from each other in moments of stress/crisis and how each of you would best feel comforted and consoled.
NAH just 2 very overwhelmed people

“What kind of support do you need right now?” is something I will ask my boyfriend when he’s upset. It’s awkward, but I’m not a mind reader. The quickest way for me to be able to help him in a way that is meaningful to him is for him to tell me what he needs. Except he doesn’t all the time, so sometimes I just have to ask. Do you need a shoulder to cry on? Do you need me to deal with another person? Do you need me to find solutions? Maybe it’s all of those things, but RIGHT NOW is the important part
英語圏だと「Are you ok?」
