I 28f live with a colleague 26f and her 3 year old kid.
Yesterday evening it was discovered that said kid had pinworms (the ones that live in your butt and pop out at night).
While disgusting, these worms are harmless and the kid is totally fine.
Naturally after we discovered this, we rushed out to the pharmacy got the medication and all three of us took our first dose.
We hustled, pushed through the drama of cleaning all the bedding, towels and clothing as well as scrubbing the bathrooms and toilet (which in reality I didn’t need to help with as it’s her child but for the sake of my own sanity i was happy to scrub in)
The next day we headed to the office and dropped the kid at daycare.
The daycare centre was informed and said it’s incredibly common and that children can still attend as long as the first dose of medication has been taken.
Later that night as we’re eating dinner my colleague tells me she thinks she will need to stay off work the next day to
monitor the k

Why isn't your home office set up in a room with a door that closes? Having it set up in the common area in a home with a 3 year old is an accident waiting to happen.
The 3 year old lives there, too. Your roommate has no obligation to remove her child from their home "so you can work" in the middle of the most frequently used common space. The three year old didn't suddenly appear. This is a member of your household.
You need to set up your home office where the equipment can be shut away from a growing toddler. And you can isolate from normal household activities while you're working.
And why did you go to the office yesterday, when you were scheduled to WFH and the other occupants left? Why was that okay yesterday but not today?

YTA. People are allowed to be in the home they pay to live in regardless of whether it would be more convenient for you if they weren’t.
Your roommate and her child live there. They are allowed to be there. They do not need an acceptable excuse or permission to be there. If their presence in their home makes it impossible for you to work in common spaces in the home, you’ll have to arrange to not work in common spaces of the home.

YTA. As a fellow WFHer, it's a home first, which you share costs for. You're using it as an office as well, which is fine, but that doesn't trump that it's a HOME. You're also the one saying the kid can't be there. This is on you to solve for.

Regardless of whether the kid *can* go to daycare with pin worms, they *shouldn't*. They're highly infectious and, as a parent of two, kids are gross and their hands are grosser.
*You* don't own the house. *You* are an equal member of the household and therefore do not get to dictate what happens when because that is not your place. You are not the authority.
She's being a responsible parent by not allowing her child to infect other children unintentionally with parasites. Harmless or not, no one wants pin worms.
If her having her child in the house, where she pays equal rent and has every right to occupy communal spaces regardless of your schedule, is a hindrance to your work then it is up to *you* to do what you can to mitigate it. If that means going into work, then that means going into work. As much as you think the world doesn't revolve around her and her child, it equally does not revolve around you either.
ETA; changed my vote because I misread and didn't see the roommate had let her son go in the day before, which is AH behaviour. Please keep your parasite-stricken children at home unless the bugs are gone.

I think this is less of a case of anyone being an AH and more she's going to stay home with her sick kid, if you need to make sure that kid isn't in the same room as you during work hours that's your responsibility to stay out of common spaces

NAH/ESH – if she wants to skive off work, that's her right. Her and the kid live there as much as you. In the same way you said she can take her kid to her mum's, you can move your set-up. You're both being stubborn and both have the right to.
The situation itself is NAH. The level of stubbornness you both exhibit makes is ESH. I'm slightly more on your side because your plans were prearranged and there isn't a need for the son the even be home but it's barely even a toe over the line.

It's not her business where you work. But it's also not your business if and when she and her kid stay at their own home. You don't have to compromise but than again she has no reason to care if you can work with the kid at home or not.

Expecting to take over the main living area of the house and expecting complete quiet when you share that house with other people is not a reasonable request. That's what bedrooms/offices are for–privacy.
It's unfortunate that roommate's kiddo has pinworms but 3yos are not great with hygiene and would presumably spread the infection at daycare so keeping them home for a few days isn't a bad plan. You could presumably work from the call center or wherever you work when you aren't working remotely as well, if you don't want to work from a bedroom/office at home.

She is an adult and you are an adult, you are not her mother or the child’s mother so it’s not up to you to decide if her child is sick enough. She can stay home with her child and your common area is a shared area, so really you are setting yourself up for trouble if the child disturbs your work you are the one who is going to be in trouble.

NAH – but you should consider that your roommate and her kid aren't the ones who are potentially going to get into trouble for violating your company's "kids in the room" policy. You're really only potentially hurting yourself.
