As someone living in Japan, I find this interesting because the “last resort job” answer says a lot about how each country is wired. In the US, yeah, the military being the top answer feels very believable. It’s one of the few paths where a guy with no money, no degree, and no clear plan can still get structure, income, and some kind of future. Back in the US, people talk about it almost like a reset button, which is kind of dark when you think about it.
In Japan, I don’t think people would jump to the military at all. It’d probably be dispatch work, construction, moving jobs, factory shifts, maybe convenience store night work. Different system, same underlying problem: when you have no leverage, you end up renting out your body, your time, or both.
That comment about “we sell our bodies too” honestly hits harder than the joke answers. Whether it’s manual labor, dangerous work, or anything else, the body becomes the asset. That part feels pretty universal, not just American.
