Ah yes, the horrors of existence. Very cool

By the time I came back to the house, it was midmorning. The chhlop loitered nearby, pretending not to notice.
I had accomplished nothing.
I had failed.
Huoy lay sunken and tired on the bench. She clutched the kapok pillow to her chest. Her arms and legs were thin as sticks. Her belly was still round, the child still inside.
She spoke in a weak voice. “Why were you gone so long? I’ve been waiting for you. Do you have some medicine for me?”
“No more, sweet, ” I said. “I have no more.”
“How long? I’m tired now. I’m very tired.”
I took up the stethoscope and the blood-pressure cuff. Her blood pressure had dropped. Her heartbeat was slow and very, very feeble.
“Do we have anything to eat?” said Huoy. She spoke in a whisper, like a child.
“The neighbours are looking for food for you.” I said.
“I need food! I need food. I need medicine. Sweet, save my life. Please save my life. I’m too tired. I just need a spoonful of rice.”
Before she died, she asked me to cradle her. I swung her onto my lap, held her in my arms. She asked me to let her kiss me. I kissed her, and she kissed me. She looked up at me with her great round eyes, and they were full of sorrow. She didn’t want to leave.
“Take care of yourself, sweet”, she said to me.
Then the room was full of people.

With the Khmer Rouge’s persecutions of educated people I was actually surprised to find out that Pol Pot was at one point a geography and history teacher. His former students actually remember him as being a good teacher.

This is only partly true. He didnt decide to not save her. If you read his book, he spent hours frantically scouring the countryside for medical help or supplies. But due to the khmer rouges backwards regime, there was a lack of any medical equipment or expertise. Performing a c section on an already sick and malnourished women with a rusted knife on a dirt floor of a hut without any anasthesia would have most likely caused her death regardless. Hence why he didnt do it……along with the posted fact that if he did, he would have exposed himself as a doctor, and thus most likely been killed.

Too many people in these comments thinking a c-section would have been the easy option. The headline doesn’t help. There were no surgical tools, there were no painkillers, no antibiotics, no hospital. He would have to have cut into his conscious wife using, at best, the equivalent of a kitchen knife. If that didn’t kill her the inevitable resulting infection would have. If the baby survived the birth, it would have starved to death like everyone else was starving or else it would have been murdered if found. Letting them both go together was the only humane choice.

If anything is going to end humanity or life on earth as we know it, it’ll be anti-intellectualism.

“Take care of yourself, sweetheart. “

This story absolutely stopped me in my tracks. When I first moved to Japan, one thing I noticed was how quietly people here respect trained professionals like doctors, teachers, and nurses, so reading about a place where that knowledge could get you killed feels almost impossible to process. Just yesterday at my local konbini, I saw a young mum thanking a clinic receptionist over the phone, and it hit me again how much ordinary life depends on skilled people doing their jobs safely. What happened to Haing Ngor is heartbreaking because there was no good choice, only survival inside terror. People love to imagine what they would have done differently from the comfort of peace, but history is cruel like that. The fact that he later won an Oscar almost feels unreal, as if the world briefly recognised the weight he carried. Some lives contain more tragedy than most of us can even comprehend.
