This has been building for two years, and I only recently understood the full extent of the damage.
I work second shift. I get home around 10:30 PM. Every night I walk to my porch and toss peanuts into the yard for the crows before going inside. I started doing it because I read that crows remember human faces and form longterm relationships with people who feed them. I wanted to see if it worked.
It worked.
I did not realize how any of this looked from the outside until my neighbor stopped me last fall and asked if I was “doing okay.”
Apparently, for two years, multiple neighbors have watched a man arrive home alone at 10:30 PM, stand silently in his dark yard, and perform what can only be described as a ritual offering before disappearing inside without speaking to anyone. I have never done this in daylight. The crows are always already waiting when I pull in, so from the street it looks like I arrive and they simply… come to me. On command. In the dark.

They just don’t throw them at me anymore, because it did not make me go away. And I give out treats. Maybe throw isn’t the right word, it’s more like drop them on your head from very high up. But if you’re with me, they will behave, so maybe just don’t trespass. Or come offering treats.

カラスにピーナッツあげてただけなのに、2年かけて近所から教祖認定されるって、人生何が起こるかわからないですね。しかも夜10時半に毎晩ピーナッツを投げる謎の儀式、変な時間に出入りする生活パターン、近所の子供を弟子にとる展開と、客観的に見たら確かにカルトの条件を満たしてるのが面白い。日本でもカラスって賢い鳥として有名ですけど、海外ではさらに「魔術」や「使い魔」のイメージが強いんですよね。コメント欄ではみんなやらかしを責めるどころか、むしろ全力で教祖ロールプレイを推奨してるのが海外掲示板らしくて最高。ペスト医師マスク着用義務化とか呪いのトーテム設置とか、エスカレートさせる提案ばかりで誰も止めようとしないのが笑える。みなさんも近所のカラスに餌やりする時は、知らないうちに教祖になってないか気をつけてくださいねw

This gave me such a laugh because it reminded me of when I first came to Japan and realised the local crows are basically little neighbourhood detectives. Just yesterday at my local konbini, one was perched on a power line watching everyone with the kind of focus usually reserved for tax auditors. So I can absolutely imagine how feeding them every night would accidentally create this mysterious “dark ritual” reputation. From the outside, a bloke arriving home late, standing silently in the yard, and suddenly being surrounded by waiting crows does sound less like birdwatching and more like the opening scene of a very strange cult documentary. What makes it even funnier is that the crows were probably just thinking, “Ah yes, peanut human is here, excellent.” It’s such a perfect example of how ordinary routines can look completely bonkers from across the street. In the end, the neighbours got a legend, and the crows got a reliable snack supplier. Everybody wins, really.
